Chronology of the Granary Island Project

2002
Gray International and the City of Gdańsk signed Letter of Intent on joint efforts at 'Wyspa Spichrzów' (the Granary Island) in Gdańsk.

June 14, 2004
Validity of the letter of intent was extended by two years.

July - September 2004
At Gray's International commission studies of existing and planned communication schemes and infrastructure systems were developed. Geological survey of the land was carried out.

January - June 2005
Commissioned by Gray International, a research of all plots which were included in the letter of intent was made.
It is decided that all studies and conceptual works will be made for the entire 'Wyspa Spichrzów' area, as only such approach would allow comprehensive solution of problems and guarantee the required quality of designs.
New reports were prepared, essential to development of the master plan, including:
digital map, land register data, abstract from current master plans, aerial photographs, digital photographs of structures and land, excerpt of study of the local commune development plans, transportation requirements including naval transport, as well as description of cultural environment.

June 2005
Gray International selected architect studios to prepare the master plan of 'Wyspa Spichrzów' development:

  1. Chapman Taylor from London. It is one of the best architectonic international studios, with international operations,
  2. Fiszer Atelier 41 from Paris - a studio set up by Stanisław Fiszer - an architect educated in Gdańsk,
  3. ASTOC from Berlin. The studio won the contest for re-development of the Hafencity docks in Hamburg.
  4. Bulanda and Mucha Architects from Warsaw - winners of many competitions including rebuilding historical areas,
  5. Alter Polis from Gdańsk - the authors of 'Wyspa Spichrzów - North' master plan.

September 30 - October 2, 2005
Gray International invited the selected five studios to a workshop in Gdańsk. Architects took part in conference organised by Eurobuild Poland, becoming acquainted with Gdańsk and Wyspa Spichrzów and received documents relating to the project.

February 24, 2006
At the Baltic Philharmonic Hall Gray International organised a seminar entitled "Wyspa Spichrzów, architectural perspective of four Europeans capitals: London, Paris, Berlin, Warszawa and Gdańsk". Participants of the meeting included: Paweł Adamowicz Mayor of the City of Gdańsk, Wiesław Bielawski Deputy-Mayor, and a large group of experts.

March 2006
Independent experts, who took part in the February seminar, developed an analysis of the five submitted designs, containing their suggestions on the selection of solutions best serving the ultimate goal of development of the optimum master plan. Danuta Kochanowska Ph.D., Piotr Lorens Ph. D., Jacek Dominiczak Ph. D. and Jacek Friedrich Ph. D. were authors of this analysis.

March 29-30, 2006
Meeting was held of all involved designers. Following discussion of results of the seminar, the following decisions were made: all studios will participate in further designing works that will be supervised by Stanislaw Fiszer, while Fiszer Atelier 41 and Alter Polis will be projects managers in the final design of development of Wyspa Spichrzów.

June 22, 2006
At the Artus Court, Gdańsk, a conference took place organized by Gray International and municipal authorities. During the conference Stanisław Fiszer presented a coherent urban and architectural concept of Wyspa Spichrzów.  Speeches were made by: Paweł Adamowicz Mayor of the City of Gdańsk, Wiesław Bielawski Deputy-Mayor, Ryszard Leśniewski,  President of Gray International, Jacek Dominiczak, and special  gests from France: Mme Chantal Guillet representing ADEFRANCE and Michel Calen with Melanie Moisan of Seine-Arche.

September 28, 2006
The City Council of Gdańsk passed a resolution on commencement of works on amendment of the local master plans for Wyspa Spichrzów.

March 26, 2007
In a meeting with the President of Gdańsk, owners and perpetual usufructuaries of land plots on the Granary Island decide on the constitution of a Granary Island Stakeholders Board – a voluntary association of companies and firms interested in the development of the Island.

June 1, 2007
Inaugural meeting of members of the Granary Island Stakeholders Board. Mr. Jan Szczygielski, Gray International Branch Manager in Gdańsk, is elected Chairman of the Board.

March 27, 2008
Gray International and the City of Gdańsk signed Letter of Intent on joint development of “Galeria na Wyspie” (Gallery on Island) complex which comes under the local master plan number 1148 – Podwale Przedmiejskie Street Area

June 26, 2008
A resolution on amendment of the local master plan number 1147 – Spichrzowa Street and Żytnia Street Area – was passed.

October 30, 2008
The City Council of Gdańsk passed a resolution on amendment of the local master plan number 1149 – Toruńska Street and Chmielna Street Area.

March 26, 2009
The President of the City of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz, and the President of Gray International, Ryszard Leśniewski, sign an annex extending the validity of the Letter of Intent concerning the cooperation of the two parties on the development of the Granary Island in Gdańsk.
