Lublin Conference Centre Project philosophy and values

Analysis of the function and nature of the space to be designed leads us to its leading term and value that is dialogue. Our project inflects this value through open, greenery-infused and egalitarian spaces of the Marshal’s Office, as well as, separately yet in the same vein, through monumental and sculptural form of the Conference Centre.

Dialogue and responsibility of the elected towards their electors is fundamental to healthy relations between societies and public institutions meant to serve them. In designing the Marshal’s Office, we strove to transform this theoretical principle into palpable reality of architectural solutions. As opposed to a traditional, closed atrium, we created a egalitarian type of space par excellance – open and transparent office spaces of the Marshal’s Office submerged in an inner park. Its greenery continues through to outdoor patios in the recessed portion of the ground floor, which create additional green spaces and reach out not only to visitors to the Marshal’s Office, but also to all strollers and users of wider public space. This space where architecture interacts with nature is crowned with a wall of live greenery on the façade of the Meeting of Cultures Centre. This combination of transparency and planted areas not only creates a unique place of work for office workers, but also breaks the ominous spell that surrounds any seat of authority, giving the society a feeling of direct and natural contact with their representatives. This idea reflects a combination of the classic agora, where all citizens could gather together, and the modern concept of limitless mass communication. In our design, this dialogue is played out in a friendly, balanced and natural green surroundings.

The unusual form of the Conference Centre building constitutes a sculptural element of the Theatre Square and its rank corresponds to that of its prestigious location. Thanks to the glass casing, this remarkable building opens up a view of the representative Theatre Square and the Meeting of Cultures Centre from the perspective of Aleje Racławickie, whilst at the same time symbolizing the idea of openness and, yet again, dialogue between the building and its users. After all, the Centre is meant to serve its users as a place to promote the fruits of their thoughts and actions, a meeting point and general public space. Finally, the sophisticated form of the Conference Centre complements the sculptural ramps of the Meeting of Cultures Centre, intended for the monumental works of the most renowned Polish sculptress – Magdalena Abakanowicz. The connection with the ramps is not only a spatial but also a functional solution.

The functional aspect of dialogue is finally expressed in a logical, clear and user-friendly indoor circulation, which connects not only the buildings of the Lublin Conference Centre and the Marshal’s Office, but also links them to the Meeting of Cultures Centre and offers the possibility of further linkage (if needed) to the planned office building on the side of Al. Racławickie.

In short, our design offers complementary spaces whose solutions are deeply rooted in their character and functions, and places them appropriately within their surroundings, thus creating a unique and complete urban complex. For proper quality corresponding to the rank and expectations associated with the nature of public space can only be achieved by breaking away from the sin of fragmentary approach to architecture and urban planning.
